Kalk Bay has the best little salon in the Deep South, in my humble opinion. You go up a narrow alley, stairs climbing up the side of the mountain, till you get to Beautiful Chaos at the top. Stop for a deep breath. Enter the calm, plant-filled space with gleaming wood floors.

Beautiful Chaos in Kalk Bay has another big drawcard, for me, apart from a superb stylist, plants, vintage style and a welcoming team, and that’s the refill station.

I’ve been trying to find a way to stop using shampoo and conditioner in non-refillable plastic bottles. For years. I’ve tried shampoo bars with mixed success. Probably because, until a year ago, I was colouring my hair. Then my sister, seven years younger than me, joined the Silver Sisters and I discovered the silver sisters movement had gone wild during lockdown.

Forced to let their grey grow out because of lockdown restrictions, thousands, no, hundreds of thousands, millions (?) of women around the world have embraced their grey locks. I think it’s brilliant. So much time was wasted sitting around waiting for colour to take, so much money spent on colour every 6 weeks. The panic about grey showing through. Really?

I’d been colouring my hair at home with a natural colour but it still came packaged in plastic (although less plastic bits than mainstream home colour kits).

South Africa’s a bit slow to get on the refillable bandwagon but Beautiful Chaos has a range on offer. You need to buy the first bottle of shampoo/conditioner and can then refill going forwards.

It works well, I make each bottle last between cuts and the silver shampoo gives my greys a lift.

Interesting read with Deborah Darling

You’re never too old and it’s never too late

Deborah Darling: You’re never too old and it’s never too late

Deborah: My mum covered her grey hair religiously every two weeks. You could see the panic when she spotted a silver hair – putting stuff on to hide it. As surely as she did it, I got the message that it’s a bad thing to have grey hair. It’s a terrible thing to look older.

Is it? These were messages we received as youngsters to say that ageing isn’t accepted. I’m here to send a different message.

There’s lots more news but that’s it for now, live lightly. Read more stories by me in Daily Maverick here
