We are looking doom in the face. With global heating continuing at its current pace the future is not looking bright, not bright at all. But what if we embrace green energy, stop using oil (and, by default, stop manufacturing plastic and cosmetics), and started living within the world’s means?

Imagine waking up in a house made from hempcrete, putting on clothes made from hemp cotton and sitting down in your indigenous garden to enjoy a breakfast of nuts, seeds, oats and hemp seeds.

Then you get in your electric car and drive to work, only 10 minutes away, On the way you stop to recharge at a farmstall along the N2 where solar-powered charging stations have been set up.

And then there’s time to pop in to the communal veggie garden and drop off this week’s kitchen organic waste for the Bokashi system. Local employees also get a small door-sized plot where they can grow their own veggies using seeds harvested from the previous season’s harvest.

There’s a lending library for books and tools, and a repair shop where you collect the kettle that’s been re-soldered.

The list goes on: a community market, sewing circles, childcare co-op, creating employment opportunities using recycled and upcycled materials, upstitching of garments.

Conscious consumption

We don’t have to imagine this. It is a reality. Tony Budden, co-founder of Hemporium SA, lives in a house made of hemp in Noordhoek, Cape Town. Solar power charging stations are being set up across the country at select farm stalls. So far only two have signed up but there will be more and so much greener than charging EVs from Eskom.

We can imagine a more eco-conscious future and embrace what’s here already. It’s all about making eco-conscious choices.

Shop at Hemporium SA for sustainable clothes and a hemp twine tote made from durable, sustainable, beautiful hemp twine.

Sustainable doesn’t mean cheap. A twine bag from HemporiumSA is going to last for years, go into the washing machine and emerge new. A backpack from Sealand Gear is made to withstand buffeting on the high seas, or the shoreline. Yes, it is more expensive than a nylon (plastic) backpack from Mr Price, made in China, but here’s the difference. The Sealand backpack will outlast the nylon job by years, no, decades. I know this because we have a couple in the family and they get the roughest treatment from my two sons and still look new after years of use.
