Unexpected visitors, from peacocks to porcupines.

We knew about the peacocks and their eerie cries, vivid plumage and graceless ‘flight’. Up into the trees at night to roost by way of a garage roof, a glide down in the morning to the nearest landing spot.

The porcupines were unexpected. We saw one next to our fence one evening, I was surprised by how big it was. And then my husband went out with his phone to see whether he could take photos. Turns out he could. The porcupine carried on snuffling in the grass. I would have kept my distance.

We have a collection of porcupine quills going back more than 20 years, gathered on walks. The collection is growing fast since our move to Clovelly in October 2020.

Watch this YouTube video of a mother porcupine and her porcupettes in the Kruger Park. Getaway magazine also has a story about porcupines: Fun facts about the prickly Cape porcupine

There’s lots more news but that’s it for now, live lightly.

  1. Porcupines have always fascinated me. What really surprised is that there is a North American species too, which isn’t as pretty as our African one.

    1. I’m learning about them too – best time to collect quills is early morning because they’re nocturnal
